This wilderness area is one of the best places to view the goats in Colorado.
Mountain goats are not native to Colorado. Their natural southern most range is northern Wyoming. The first goats were released in this wilderness area in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Since then additional goats have been imported from the north and the herds have prospered and multiplied. There are now an estimated 90 to 100 goats in the region. They tend to herd together and are most frequently sighted in the rocky cliffs above timberline.

I have been photographing and enjoying the herds for years now. I make 2 to 4 trips above the treeline per year. The weather conditions in Denver can be just down right hot. The weather on the mountain may include rain, sleet, hail and snow with temps from 60 down to 20 all in the same afternoon. The lighting is the scary part. I have rushed back to my car many times as strikes take place within miles. I have had so much static charge around me that I could hear it hiss and spark around me. Many of my trips end with never seeing the goats or because of bad weather.
