Very Large Gallerie of Rocky Mountain Goats. : Mountain Goats.
This wilderness area is one of the best places to view the goats in Colorado.
Mountain goats are not native to Colorado. Their natural southern most range was northern Wyoming. The first goats were released in This wilderness area in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Since then additional goats have been imported from the north and the herds have prospered and multiplied. There are now an estimated 90 to 100 goats in the region. They tend to herd together and are most frequently sighted in the rocky cliffs above timberline.

Arches National-Park Utah : It was impossible to see far objects it was even foggy at less then 1 mile. I decided to use the foreground as the key lead in. I aways liked this stile anyway. The weather was very cloudy and held back much of the light . I took advantage of what light I did get, it just made it harder to be at a planed place with good light.

I just added a few more photos (early spring 2008.I wanted to get Turret arch through North Window. I also wanted to see if I could spend more time in Canyonlands and get Meas Arch at sunrise. You can see Canyonlands in its gallery. http://danspage.smugmug.com/gallery/4600294_pzqAv#271750139

The gorgeous hot red/pink garners our attention, but the flowers are actually small green tubes: one is visible in the left picture near top center, the other at nine o'clock. As Castilleja plants age, the colored bracts spread upward and the flowers elongate and become more visible.

Colorado Columbine

This exotic Columbine is the state flower of Colorado. It has a broad habitat range, thriving on hot, dry, talus slopes and in moist, shady forests; its color varies through a wonderful range of whites, blues, and purples; and its flowers thrive from June through August. The five petals have unusual and showy spurs; the five sepals are usually larger than the petals.

"Coerule" is Latin for "blue".

Sunflower Family

Packera werneriifolia is typically found above tree-line in rocky soils. It often forms foot diameter tight clusters of numerous dark green leaves and dozens of yellow and gold flowers. It is often found in the company of Senecio fremontii which also forms a dense mat topped by very similar appearing flowers. S. fremontii is distinguished from P. werneriifolia by looking at the leaves: those of S. fremontii are light green, sessile, prominently toothed, and succulent appearing. Those of P. werneriifolia are dark green, petioled, finely toothed, and thinner.

Penstemon whippleanus (Penstemon)
Scrophulariaceae (Snapdragon Family)

From a distance, they look like tiny flowers. But a closer look shows them to be tiny, drooping, slightly purple-tinged, thin buds at the tip of tall, rather sparsely-leafed stems. Penstemon whippleanus has about as rich a color and as showy a cluster as any flower.

Often the flower stem has a slight arch as it grows from one leaf node to the next. Color varies from an intense burgundy purple to a silvery sheen purple. A close look at the flower will show silvery white stripes through the purple and a multitude of shining hairs on the flower surface. Penstemon whippleanus is common in high mountains and lower alpine forest openings and along trails.
